Semedorato and Sustainability

Semedorato for the environment

Beer is one of the most drunk alcoholic beverages, especially in the summer months, but few are aware that 57 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2) are generated to produce a keg of beer (ie the equivalent of 220 kilometers traveled by car).

Most of the emissions derive:
- the electricity used by the brewery machinery
- while the rest of the environmental impact is attributable to the production and transport of barley
Also not to be underestimated is the production of wastewater from breweries that can cause pollution problems in the pools of water where they are poured.

Initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of the brewing sector are going very slowly.

Semedorato for the environment

The autonomous and independent brewery Semedorato, among the top 10 companies in Italy for production capacity, over the years has shown great sensitivity on the issue of sustainability and emissions. For this reason it has set up and implemented company projects in order to pursue the objectives of eco-sustainability.

In fact, among the projects and objectives, we find:

- ACTIVATION OF THE 250 KWH PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM STARTING FROM 01/11/2022
Thus allowing the abatement of about 80% of emissions deriving from the use of electricity used by the brewery machinery;

- SHORT CHAIN AND KM 0 PROJECT
Semedorato buys raw materials, subsidiary and packaging materials in its territory, in order to reduce the environmental impact resulting from transport;

- MALT OF PURE SICILIAN BARLEY FROM SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
In the past and precisely to reduce the carbon dioxide produced in transport, Semedorato closed supply chain contracts for the supply of barley from sustainable agriculture in its production area:

- PRODUCTION CHAIN CLOSURE
Among the points of the Km 0 project there is also the reduction of the environmental impact with the closure of the production chain, in fact the project for the construction of the Malteria has been approved, which will come into operation by November 2022, thus reducing the consequential emissions of transport, reducing costs and offering the service to other smaller companies in the area.
Among the future projects there is also the production and processing of hops;

- PURIFICATION AND RECYCLING SYSTEM OF WASTE WATER
Furthermore, the purification of the water deriving from the production process is fundamental, ready to be reused in the process for non-food use, thus contributing to the concept of circularity;

- REUSE OF PRODUCTION WASTE (TREBBIE) IN ZOOTECHNICS AND BIOMASS
Semedorato does not throw away anything, even the malt and yeast waste deriving from the production of beer are not discharged into the environment, but resold and used by livestock activities.
